The medical profession is highly regarded by the general population. Medical study places are coveted among students, but the number of places is limited in Germany and admission to the course is tied to the numerus clausus (NC for short). For some years now, the NC for medicine has been 1.0 at almost all German universities, which is higher than for any other subject. Those who do not meet the admission requirements with their Abitur grade can still get a place at university by taking the medical test. After all, when doctors start their careers, they have completed a learning-intensive course of study, get into a time-consuming job and from then on often put their own interests to the back burner.
However, the profession also offers great diversity, the opportunity to pursue one's own interests in a suitable specialty, and a lavish salary. But how do doctors actually compare with other professions in terms of salary?
The average salary of the working population in Germany is around 45,000 euros (gross) per year. In the rankings of the salary portals that analyzed the average salaries of the various occupational groups in 2023, different best-paid occupations are named depending on the salary portal that was evaluated. However, physicians consistently place among the top earners. With an average gross annual salary of 92,600 euros, they land in first or second place, depending on the underlying ranking, and are in a neck-and-neck race with experts from the pharmaceutical industry, who can expect an average annual salary of 85,100 euros (gross). Pilots also have a very well-paid profession, with an average annual gross income of 83,300 euros.
