Charité Advocates for Greater Freedom in Nursing Profession to Combat Staff Shortage To make the nursing profession more appealing, several hospitals have proposed ideas, one of which is granting nurses more competence and autonomy. In a jointly crafted position paper, Berlin's Charité University Medicine, along with other clinics, calls for academic training and increased autonomy in the nursing profession. Carla Eysel, the CEO of Charité, criticizes the fact that nurses are not allowed to administer vaccines, prescribe medications, or make diagnoses at a master's level, according to a statement from the hospital on Friday. The proposed solution is to strengthen the "competence and autonomy of nursing professionals."

The reason for this position paper is reportedly the shortage of healthcare professionals in the nursing field. Charité currently estimates a shortage of approximately 35,000 nursing staff in the German healthcare system. To address this gap, Eysel argues that it is necessary to academically qualify nursing professionals. "This significantly enhances the attractiveness of the nursing profession and offers greater opportunities for career advancement," it was stated. The degree of autonomy would depend on the level of education achieved.

Charité: Academic Enhancement of Nursing Staff as a Solution As an example of academic enhancement, Eysel mentioned a specialized role called the "Endometriosis Nurse."

Endometriosis is a gynecological condition in women characterized by severe pain during menstruation, abdominal cramps, or pain during sexual intercourse. The initiators plan to present their position paper to German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) on Sunday at the World Health Summit in Berlin. This is an effort to highlight the importance of the academic advancement of nursing professionals and the strengthening of their competencies and autonomy to address the staffing shortage.
