The procedure is complicated and bureaucratic. Without appropriate support and experience on the ground, it takes weeks and months longer accordingly. If one further considers that every lost week means a loss of earnings of at least 1,000 euros, then this is more than alarming.

From January to the end of July 2023, a total of 227 doctors from abroad applied for a professional licence in Berlin, the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LAGeSo) told "Ärzte Zeitung" when asked. Only 19 doctors were granted permission. A rate of not even ten percent.

The reason given by the LAGeSo for the negative decisions was that the applications in the process this year lacked the necessary documents and proof. Among other things, applicants would have to pass a language test.

Most of the doctors are reportedly from Syria: A total of four people from the civil war country received a professional licence this year. They are followed by doctors from Egypt (3) and Turkey, the Russian Federation and Iraq, each with two licences.

Here is the report from the "Ärzte-Zeitung": https://www.aerztezeitung.de/Nachrichten/Auslaendische-Aerzte-Nicht-mal-zehn-Prozent-bekommen-Berufserlaubnis-442310.html
