The shortage of physicians in Germany is alleviated by an influx of foreign doctors, most of whom originate from Syria, Turkey, and various European countries. The number of foreign doctors has doubled over the last decade, reaching 63,763 by the end of last year.

The main cause of the physician shortage lies in the increasing demand for medical personnel, which cannot be met solely by German graduates. Approximately 11,000 graduates leave German universities annually, yet not all opt for a medical career.
Despite the influx of foreign doctors, experts warn of problems arising from inadequate German language skills among their foreign counterparts. This language barrier is considered an existing and worsening issue. The majority of foreign doctors come from EU countries, the Middle East, and other European states, with Syria, Romania, Austria, Greece, Russia, and Turkey being the primary countries of origin.
