Specialists are among the most sought-after professions, with healthcare professionals increasingly in demand in recent years. A Job Monitor analysis by the Bertelsmann Foundation reveals that specialized psychiatrists and internists have risen to the top of the list of the most sought-after professions in Germany.

The foundation analyzed nearly 45 million online job listings published since 2019 to gauge occupational demand in the German labor market, down to the level of 401 districts and independent cities. The greatest surge in job postings occurred in the fields of healthcare, social services, education, and teaching, with a 3.5% increase in the share of all job advertisements from 2019 to 2020.

However, while job listings in these areas remain abundant, other professions are catching up and growing at a faster rate, according to the report's authors. For instance, healthcare and nursing professionals climbed from fifth place in 2019 to third place in 2020, currently holding the eighth position in job listings. Additionally, amid the first year of the pandemic, demand for human and dental practitioners significantly increased, shifting them from the 35th to the 13th place in the demand rankings from 2019 to 2020.

Notably, human and dental medicine professionals saw the most substantial long-term growth, with a 17-place difference in their rankings between 2019 and 2022, making them the leading long-term ascenders across all professional categories.
