The most sought-after professions in Germany have shifted due to the influence of the online shopping boom, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Bertelsmann Foundation's analysis of 45 million job postings from 2019 to 2023, warehouse logistics workers are now in high demand, with job listings ranking first in 162 out of 401 German districts. In urban areas, office and secretarial professionals are the most frequently sought-after, although they rank first in only 101 districts.

The report also highlights a decline in skilled workers in certain professions between 2019 and 2022, including mechatronics technicians, tool technicians, and bank clerks. However, in 2023, there is a resurgence in demand for skilled positions, with the share of skilled job openings increasing to nearly 41% in the first half of the year.

Notably, the healthcare sector has seen significant growth in job postings, with psychiatrists and psychotherapists leading the way, followed by professionals in paper and packaging technology, childcare providers and educators, and internal medicine specialists.

The report also underscores substantial regional variations in the most sought-after professions across different cities and districts. It emphasizes that online commerce has created new opportunities in the job market, both for entry-level positions and for higher qualifications, such as master's degree holders in sales and software development.

The study analyzed a vast dataset of job postings from 2019 to 2023, with a focus on 1,210 professions. Job ads from temporary employment agencies were given less weight in the analysis due to differing hiring practices compared to other sectors.
