Do I need a visa to work as a doctor in Germany?
Doctors from third countries who want to live and work in Germany need a visa for professionals. In addition to the licence to practise medicine, a concrete job offer is usually a prerequisite. Those who are older than 45 and coming to work in Germany for the first time must also prove a gross annual salary of at least 46,860 euros. The visa is issued for a maximum of four years. After that, a permanent residence title can be applied for.
Does everyone need a visa to enter Germany?
Citizens of EU/EFTA countries enjoy freedom of movement - they can enter Germany without a visa. Citizens of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, Great Britain and the USA can also enter Germany without a visa. To be allowed to work in Germany, they must apply for a residence permit. To do so, they can apply to the foreigners authority in their city. However, anyone who wants to work shortly after arriving in Germany should still apply for a visa before travelling.
What is the EU Blue Card and what advantages does it offer?
The EU Blue Card is a special residence title for academics. For this, your foreign studies must have been recognised. In addition, you need a concrete job offer with a gross annual salary of at least 44,304 euros. Advantages of the EU Blue Card include facilitation of family reunification and planning security: holders of the card are entitled to a settlement permit in Germany (with German language skills at level B1, which is necessary for the licence to practise medicine anyway).
