The medical profession in Germany is becoming more colorful: Almost 60,000 physicians from abroad are currently working in the Federal Republic. This is according to the latest statistics from the German Medical Association (as of December 2022). This means that of a total of 421,000 working physicians in Germany, more than 14 percent come from another country.
In 2022, the number of foreign physicians increased by 2,683. Overall, it can be observed: The number of foreign physicians in Germany has been increasing for years. In the past 25 years, it has increased more than fivefold. This is a good development for the healthcare system, because the current shortage of doctors would make it much more difficult for many hospitals to fill vacancies without colleagues from abroad.
A large proportion of foreign colleagues come from other European countries: In total, there are around 36,200 working physicians. If we consider only the EU states, 23,500 come from these countries. In 2021 alone, 1,254 physicians from other EU states took up work in Germany. That is around 6 percent fewer than in the previous year.
The largest number of working foreign doctors comes from Syria: A total of 5,339, of whom 4,596 are working in German hospitals, while the rest are working as outpatients or in other forms of medical practice. Romania (4,265) ranks second in the statistics, followed by Greece (2,571), Austria (2,529) and the Russian Federation (2,524).
